Facebook’s has a new status update — kah ching! The social networking giant’s value rose to $50 billion after Goldman Sachs decided to invest $450 million.

Bloomberg reports the company’s value is now higher than some more established companies like eBay, Yahoo, Boeing and Target. Bloomberg says Goldman has good reason to invest in Facebook before it ever goes public.

“Now as part of the deal as well Goldman is going raise another one and a half billion dollars from outside investors for Facebook at the new $50 billion valuation and when Mark Zuckerberg decides to go public Goldman Sachs could potentially be one of the banks that help it do so.”

But CNBC is quizzical about why Goldman would invest in a private company that ‘may or may not’ generate any profits and is not obligated by law to reveal its financial information.

A contributor says Goldman stands to benefit no matter how Facebook performs.

“I should tell you that there are some people who believe this is just a way for Goldman Sachs to buy its way in to potentially lead an IPO of this company in the future… FLASH … Also they might be able to make their money back irrespective of whether the investment turns out to be well. Which is to say, fees from an IPO, fees from raising $1.5 billion, and by the way all of the private wealth management people — clients that might come to Goldman Sachs just to get access to this.”

CNBC is not the only one asking questions. According to Forbes, the large sum of cash has drawn the attention of the SEC, which is looking at whether Facebook has exceeded the 500 shareholder limit on private companies.

“Some speculate that passing that 500 mark and thus disclosing certain financial information may convince billionaire Zuckerberg to take Facebook public.”

Zuckerberg has always opposed plans to take the company public and Fortune magazine says- rightfully so.

“Facebook clearly has no need for capital (a prime motivator for IPOs), has plenty of liquidity options for existing shareholders and still could avoid many public company hassles outside of the financial filings… In fact, one even could argue this deal makes an IPO less imminent.”
